Back on the strange world that the currenteers had been searching, the night was still, if not unsettling. Even as Fadrin was trying to recover from his initial shock of a familiar face, the otter next to the fire stood upright, chuckling.

“And here I was beginning to wonder if you’d ever come for me.”

“Uncle Thast! You’re alive!”

The otters ran and tightly embraced one another. For a long moment they stood, paws rubbing one another’s backs, tears from both otters beginning to stream in relief. Both had for so long wondered if they would ever see one another again. As they released one another, they began to converse, wiping their eyes. As was not uncommon amongst otters, they held their paws on one another’s shoulders for another few moments following the embrace.

“How did you get back out here, Fadrin? Tell me that you and the others haven’t been stranded all this while.”

The Skipper shook his head. “No, that wouldn’t explain where I got me hat! Until a few hours ago, I wasn’t even aware that this world was here. I’ve come with a crew of my own, on another starrunner named the Lasmarine, specifically to find the Rano and the remnants of her crew. I’m so glad to see that you made it after all!”

Thast nodded to Fadrin before turning toward his daughter. “Likewise for me that you did, too, Fadrin. Tew, go fetch Macio and bring him here.”

“No need to. And, I prefer to be ‘beckoned’, not ‘fetched’, if you don’t mind.”

A male syan younger than Fadrin had dropped from the trees, landing deftly, and approached them. He wore a black lopsided beret atop his head, a brass hoop earring dangling a couple of feathers attached to his left ear. In one paw, he wielded a wooden staff that had seen plenty of use for walking. The syan continued, sending a glance to the Skipper.

“Also, it’s very difficult to hide this kind of news from those that are well acquainted with the art of star reading. I saw it coming.”

“Star reading? Is that like astrology?” Fadrin asked.

The syan answered with a dark glare of offense. “No, not at all. According to astrology, our destinies are determined by the predictable alignment of the night sky, a foolish idea that we cannot choose our own paths. The stars do not govern our lives, or even predict things by mere chance of placement; they simply report what they observe. Anyone that listens can learn much from their stories. Astrology mocks everything I know on the topic.”

Fadrin gave him an odd look. The otter standing next to the fire chuckled, glancing often at the strange syan. “Sorry, lad, I sometimes forget about your heightened sense of awareness. I blame my age. Did you bring Metar with you?”

Macio shook his head, staring toward the fire with a cool expression. “She’ll be here shortly. “She’s returning from her normal round of perimeter checks. I don’t know why she doesn’t just allow me to watch everything myself.”

Thast chided.
